About Smoke Break

Smoke Break

The journey

Chapter 1

The idea

January 2025

It was the middle of winter and we were looking for our mentor from Reboot, who had disappeared. We would usually find him in his smoke spots, but he was not there at all.

On our way back, going up the stairs, Yusuf looked as if a lightbulb had appeared over his head. “What if we made a game about this?” he said. That was exactly what we did. It was a vital Reboot project, so we started planning.

Chapter 2

Two of us

We planned to work as three, but team balancing left it to Yusuf and me. I took the game logic and Yusuf took the maps.

Yusuf drew the overhead view of the whole Reboot building and its surroundings in a pixelated art style, then tuned the grid squares by hand so the characters feel as if they are walking around the area normally. He made two more maps on top of that.

Chapter 3

Single player, then multiplayer

The game logic came together gradually, shaped by balance and the project requirements.

Then I had the idea of a one-on-one mode, where one player is Ahmed, the mentor, and the other is the student looking for him. The multiplayer mode was made purely for fun. For the hell of it, I even added Minesweeper, just because I could.

Chapter 4

Playable here

February 2025

It was a fun project to make, simple and straight to the point. Since it is only a frontend, it was easy to host on Vercel, so you can play it right here.
